A Legacy of
Arctic Surfing

Surfing in Norway started right here in Unstad. In 1963, two young Lofoten locals, Thor Frantzen and Hans Egil Krane, discovered surfing on their travels abroad. Inspired by the Beach Boys album Surfin’ Safari, they returned home and crafted their own boards—marking the birth of Norwegian surf culture.

Years later, in the 90s, Kristian Breivik reignited the passion for Unstad’s waves, bringing Norway’s surf community north to experience the Arctic swell. By the early 2000s, Thor and his wife Randi had established a simple campsite in Unstad, welcoming the first wave of surf travelers.

It was their daughter Marion Frantzen and her husband Tommy Olsen who saw Unstad’s full potential. They transformed the campsite into Unstad Arctic Surf—a world-class surf retreat offering high-end experiences in one of the most remote and breathtaking surf destinations on Earth.
